Also known as the "Cathedral of Trent", this imposing religious building hosted the sessions of the Council of Trent in the 16th century. 

Elegant and majestic, this imposing symbol of the city of Trento in the 16th century was the scene of a key event of Catholicism: the decrees of the Council of Trento (1545 - 1563) were promulgated under its vaults. Its appearance is due to Bishop Federico Vanga who in 1212 entrusted the task of redesigning the Cathedral to the architect Adamo d 'Arogno, who was succeeded by his sons and grandsons in the continuation of the works. The structure stands on the remains of an ancient early Christian basilica dedicated to San Vigilio, which can be visited in the basement of the Cathedral (but is currently closed for renovation work). Presumably erected around the sixth century, with the function of a cemetery basilica, it also houses the tomb of the city's patron saint, San Vigilio.
