Chiesa di San Francesco Saverio
• from January 2021 to December 2025, from Monday to Sunday 10am-12am, 2:30pm-7pm
A true manifesto of the Counter-Reformation and the Jesuit tradition, the Church of San Francesco Saverio houses valuable works of art ready to capture your attention.
Built between 1708 and 1711, the church of San Francesco Saverio was designed by the architect Andrea Pozzo as an artistic and ideological manifesto of the Tridentine Counter-Reformation. Visitors will be welcomed by the façade surmounted by an attic with a crossed tympanum. In the center stands a full-arched window while in the tympanum of the portal stands a large statue depicting the saint in the act of wielding the crucifix. The interior is rich in sacred images that ideally lead to the altar. On the sides of the central nave are four chapels that house valuable eighteenth-century wooden confessionals. Also interesting are the other statues dedicated to the Jesuit saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francesco Borgia, Luigi Gonzaga and Francesco Regis.
