Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore
• from January 2024 to December 2026, from Monday to Sunday 10am-12am, 2:30pm-7pm
One of the main churches of the Council of Trent, surmounted by the city's tallest bell tower. The building, of very high historical value, houses an impressive collection of works of art.
In the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, on 13 April 1562, the congregations of the third and final phase of the Council of Trent officially opened. A historical fact sufficient alone to certify the importance of this building erected between 1520 and 1524 by Bishop-Prince Bernardo Clesio. The intervention involved the construction of a single-nave church, equipped with a barrel vault and without a transept, replacing the original layout of the Romanesque building. Inside you can admire the works of art that have accumulated over the centuries, such as the Cantoria del Grandi, the south side door, the frescoes by Martin Teofilo Polacco, the altarpieces by Cignaroli and Moroni, as well as the altarpieces by the architects Sartori and Benedetti. The bell tower is impressive, the tallest in the city at 53 metres.
