Nineteenth-century fortifications of the VI sector

The Monte Bondone

The VI sector of the Fortress occupied a large part of Monte Bondone, starting above the Vela barrage, passing through Candriai and reaching the top of Palon summit. A more advanced defensive line occupied the area of the Three Peaks of Monte Bondone.

Sector

The Monte Bondone group separates the Adige valley from the Lakes valley, dominating the city of Trento. At its center is the Viote plateau surrounded by the main peaks: the Palon and the so-called Three Peaks of Monte Bondone: Cornetto, Dos d'Abramo and Cima Verde. Today the mountain is a tourist area that offers accommodation, ski slopes, walks in the woods and meadows. In the nineteenth century, the Candriai battery and the Mandolin blockhouse controlled the northern side of the mountain. At the beginning of the twentieth century, after the construction of the military road that went up to Bondone from Trento, the complex of the Viote barracks and the stronghold of Palon were built. At the outbreak of the war a new entrenched camp went up the Monte Bondone, new cave and concrete works controlled the western side of the Fortress. A more advanced line of defense went between Mount Rosta and Cima Cornetto, the highest point of the defense with its 2179 meters.
