To travel through Trentino is to travel through a magnificent treasure trove of biodiversity. In just a few kilometres, you can go from the Mediterranean scent of olive by Lake Garda to the majesty of high-altitude glacial environments.

30% of Trentino is made up of conserved and protected nature, with the area being home to one of Italy’s oldest national parks, two large natural parks and a successful management system for protected areas.

Our flora is wonderfully rich, with over 2000 plant species - 17 of which are native and exclusively found in Trentino. Trentino’s wildlife is unmatched anywhere else in the Alps: more than 36,000 roe deer, 30,000 chamois, 12,000 deer, about 100 bears, 26 packs of wolves, 70 pairs of golden eagles, but also ibex, bearded vultures and lynxes.

This relationship with nature requires commitment and awareness, including from you. We therefore ask you to abide by a few crucial rules and take certain precautions when walking in the forests or hiking in the mountains.

Our reccomendation for when you go walking in the mountain

In Trentinothere are over 5,000 km of walking trails: ideal for relaxing and breathing in the mountain air. The important thing is to follow a few simple rules of caution, such as those suggested by Trentino Alpine-Hut Association, the S.A.T., the Trentino Alpine Rescue, the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation and the Trentino Alpine Guide organisation.

  • Choose suitable gear and EQUIPMENT
  • It's best to travel IN GROUPS
  • SHARE YOIR PLAN with family, friends or lodge managers

Our recommendations for when you are in the woods

Trentino has around 500 million trees and over 3,700 animal and plant species: an incredible treasure trove of biodiversity that needs care and attention, starting with the little things. 

  • WALK ON THE TRAILS or, if you are travelling by bike, cycle only where it is permitted
  • Bring a bag for your RUBBISH. There are no bins in the woods
  • Do not disturb or frighten WILD ANIMALS. Admire hem from a distance and do not feed them
  • If you are walking with a dog KEEP IT ON A LEASH
  • MANY FLOWERS ARE PROTECTED SPECIES. Take photos instead of bringing them home with you
  • DO NOT PICK beries or mushrooms you don't recognise: they could be poisonous
  • DO NOT LIGHT FIRES. If you see a fire starting, get far away and call the fire services immediatly

 

How to behave around bears and wolves

Trentino has numerous brown bears and wolves: these are timid animals which do not usually seek out contact with humans. However, it is essential to abide by certain precautions. 

  • MAKE YOURSELF HEARD! Speak loudly, make noise and travel in groups
  • Don't leave food or ORGANIC WASTE behind you as this could attract wildlife
  • NEVER APPROACH a wolf or a bear, especially in the presence of their young
  • In the event of close encounter KEEP CALM and distance yourself slowly 
  • IN THE ANIMAL SHOWS SIGNS OF AGRESSION lie face down on the ground and protect your face and neck by interlacing your fingers and placing them on the back of your nek
  • DO NOT FOLLOW THE ANIMALS or interfere with their behaviour
  • Always keep dogs ON THE LEASH
